ALET LES BAINS
At the very heart of the medieval city of Alet, the Notre-Dame Cathedral Abbey is a major monument, revealing its archaic, Romanesque and Gothic elements to lovers of beautiful stones as well as to simple Boeotians … if we speak sometimes from the 9th century, the origins of this abbey are unknown.
In the 12th century, it attracted many pilgrims. It experienced an unexpected revival after the difficult times of the Crusade against Catharism, by being chosen as the seat of a new bishopric.
The abbey included in the ramparts of the city was destroyed during the wars of religion and only imposing remains remain today: the 12th century Notre Dame cathedral, the chapter house, the north entrance door .
